2009 Special Youth Challenge Fundraiser
We lost a dear friend and fellow SYCian in the early hours before the start of the fundraiser, Kathy Somers went home to the Lord. Kathy was very involved with SYC from the start; she and her husband Denny have hosted SYC at their family farm since the start. Kathy has done many things during the years from cameraperson, scrap booker, proofreader, picture printer, cookie baker and the list goes on and on and on. The past few years her health had deteriorated but she still came out to enjoy the events on her scooter. She was a great witness for the Lord. If you ever met Kathy you will never forget her, she truly enjoyed being around each and every one of you and she will be watching over us all as we go forth.
This year’s fundraiser had a very nice turn out once again. The weekend had a few sprinkles off and on, but there was a steady stream of people all weekend long. Parking was at the gravel pit and there was a trolley to give you a ride to the farm, this freed up parking for the handicap vehicles and also kept the road from plugging up, it worked out great.
There were many new attractions this year; HSO (Hunting Simulation Organization) was there with popup motion target 3-D archery shooting. There were some that qualified to go to nationals in Wisconsin in December, congratulations to all that qualified. Other events included: practice trap shooting, the new and improved Annie Oakley shoot and 5 stand sporting clays with prizes awarded daily. Clay County 4-H shooting club had: pellet gun shooting with instruction for kids, archery instruction and shooting for kids, game recovery and blood trailing exercises and shooting competitions with prizes for the kids.
The live auction was a big success with tons of stuff being donated for the auction. There were guns, fishing equipment, wildlife pictures, hunting equipment, a chain saw carving of a wild turkey and the list goes on and on. Thanks to Clinton Jones, Ben Hollesen, Denny Dostal and Chad McCarty for all the help with auctioneering to clerking, to everyone that donated items for the auction and to everyone that attended to make this a huge success.
Terry Baxter was the weekend speaker; he has been with us several times for hunts and fundraisers. Terry had daily devotions, some great messages through out the weekend.
Roger and his crew did a great job with the food. The food line was busy all weekend; the milk shake machine was a big hit, thanks to Burger King for the use of it. We also had many volunteers that brought in homemade cookies for sweet treats.
A SPECIAL THANKS to all that attended and donated for this special event, also a BIG THANKS to all the volunteers to get this all set up and running for the weekend. SYC has seen a steady growth since the start and you all make this possible.
Pictures from the weekend are in the picture section be sure to check them out.
