Friday night banquet was at the Legion Hall in Sioux Rapids, what a crowd, it was a full house. Roger and crew had another great meal. Thanks Ben for smoking the pork again!
Terry Baxter gave the supper prayer and got the weekend started. All the hunters were introduced and the new hunters all received a SYC blue jean quilt made by Darlene Wise and a Hunter’s Bible presented from the SYC group, the kids that need camouflage clothing are outfitted with that too. Randy Larson along with his co-host Helmer were our weekend speakers, what a fun weekend we had with these two. After the speaker the hunters’ head back to their housing to get a good nights sleep.
Saturday morning starts off early with rise and shine at 4:45 am. The hunters and guides grab a light breakfast and then with the help of several transporters get them out to the blinds. Megan brought in the 1st deer of the day. “Girl’s rule” Everyone comes back in for brunch, rest time and fellowship time. Randy and Helmer had Saturday noon devotions. They hunters and guides start getting ready between 3 and 4 to head back out to the fields.
While the hunters were out hunting we had 3 special men that had volunteered to bring in fish for supper. There were busy for a several hours breading 800 fillets of perch and then cooking all of it for us. What a great supper, it was enjoyed by all. A big thanks goes out to Brad Kamies, Red Birchard and Larry Larson for taking time out of their schedules to do this for us. Also big thanks to them and to all of their buddies that helped catch all the fish. Thanks to Scott Wulfkuhler for cooking up a roaster full of gumbo for us all too, it is always a crowd pleaser.
By the end of the 1st day the hunters were up to 9 deer. Nick had to let Megan know “the boys were back”. After supper there was time for campfire and roasting marshmallows and then off to bed.
Sunday morning the remaining hunters that still need a deer head back out to the field bright and early while the others take advantage to get some extra shuteye. By brunch time we were up to 11 deer for the weekend. What a nice harvest for these young hunters. Randy had Sunday service after lunch and we had special music from hunter Nick Bassett, wow can this young man sing. The hunters got to speak about their weekend if they wanted to and it is always nice to hear from them.
A BIG THANK-YOU to all the volunteers, guides, landowners, people that open up their homes for housing, all the people that bake up a storm bringing all kinds of goodies for the weekend, our fishing buddies and our contributors, you are all a very important part of this organization. We had several new volunteers this year and it was great having you and will look forward to seeing you at the next hunt. To the SYC board and your families, THANK –YOU for all the time you all put in organizing and planning to get a hunt like this to go off so smoothly.
